HOUSTON, TX:  Karen Stokes Dance presents Dance, Film, and Conversation on September 30 – October 2, 2014, at 7:30pm at The Barn.Dance, Film, and Conversation is an evening of live performance and new dance for film projects by Karen Stokes Dance that will include discussion between the audience and artists. The audience is invited to engage with the Artistic Director and company members about the show, upcoming projects, and the company itself.

KSD will preview two sections from Stokes’ upcoming project Deep: Seaspace. Deep: Seaspace investigates the history and future of Houston through the lens of its two most well-known enterprises: shipping & the offshore oil industry and space exploration. For this concert, KSD will present two sections (one live, one film) inspired by the Port of Houston Authority, in honor of the 2014 Centennial Celebration of the Port.

KSD will also present the duet “Black & White” (working title), a new collaborative initiative with French composer Tiziana De Carolis (supported in part by the Texas French Alliance for the Arts). This past June, a salon style performance of “Black and White” was performed at the exhibition “Ailleurs/Elsewhere” at the French Consulate in Houston, with support from the Texan French Alliance for the Arts. Composer De Carolis has created seven compositions under the title “Dualities” that will be released soon and “Black & White” is one of these seven compositions. Stokes will expand the duet using another “Dualities” piece for Dance, Film, and Conversation.

KSD will premiere “Gallery Construction 5,” the most recent of the Gallery Construction films that revolve around art installations in Houston.  “Gallery Construction 5,” featuring dancer Jessica Cortez, is housed in the shimmering light of Soo Sunny Park’s installation “Unwoven Light,” that was at the Rice Gallery in summer 2013.

Karen Stokes Dance premieres Dance, Film, and Conversation on Tuesday – Thursday, September 30-October 2, 2014, at 7:30pm at The Barn, 2201 Preston, Houston, TX., 77003.
