Philadelphia’s Koresh Dance Company returns to the Kaplan Theatre for a special one-night performance on Saturday, October 25th at 8:00 PM.  The curtain raises to the full ten-member Koresh Dance Company clad in white for the celebratory work, “Come Together,” that channels Roni Koresh’s Yemenite roots to the music of the Idan Raichel Project. This piece sets the tone for this compelling work which juxtaposes Middle Eastern music with classical favorites, sharing with the audience both the grounded, driving, earthy rhythms of the old world with the ethereal, heavenly sounds of the new. Enjoy both the sweeping circle patterns and gesture drawn from Israeli folk dance, as well as stunning athleticism as the Koresh dancers seamlessly shift between classical folk and pedestrian movement styles.

Koresh Dance Company was founded in 1991 by Israeli-born choreographer and artistic director Roni Koresh. Known for its engaging performance and technically superb dancers, the company performs critically acclaimed works at its annual Philadelphia dance season, as well as in touring performances around the country.  Critics say that “when the dust settles after a Koresh concert, you must leave bedazzled.”

Following the performance, join us for a reception in the Deutser Art Gallery for the opening of Naftali Hilger’s The Jews of Yemen.  Israeli photojournalist, Naftali Hilger’s breathtaking photos of Yemen reveal a nation and a landscape lost in time.  His intimate portraits of the isolated Jewish communities of Yemen were taken over a period of 20 years.

In highlighting Roni Koresh’s Yemenite roots through dance and Naftali Hilger’s The Jews of Yemen photographs, we bring together a dynamic evening of these two art forms.

Tickets are $18 member/$25 public/$13 students and senior adults.  For tickets and information, visit erjcchouston.org or call 713/551-7255.
