Uptown Dance Company Spring Fusion Dance Festival 2016

Uptown Dance Spring Infusion 2016

“Gulledge-Brown has chosen quality and sophisticated material for her company to perform. Good dancing is the core and strength of this fusion (or infusion) of artists.” -Nichelle Suzanne Strzepek, Dance Source Houston, 2009

Uptown Dance Company invites you to a celebration of the female choreographic voice in honor of Women’s History Month. Presenting three world premieres by three Houston-based female choreographers, UDC’s third annual Spring Fusion Dance Festival is a night of romance, humor and passion.

The festival begins with performances by Uptown Dance Company’s pre-professional division (Uptown Dance Company II, Senior Company and Junior Company). UDC II performs a brand new contemporary work, “Cosmos”, by Andre Silva of Texas Ballet Theater. They also debut a new work by UDC artistic director Beth Gulledge Brown. Titled “La apasionadas”, the piece is about connecting the Latin American expression of passion to the classical form of dance. Senior Company and Junior Company will reprise their works from Dance Infusion 2015, choreographed by UDC dancers Lindsay Cortner and Eric Glenn.

UDC main company takes the stage with three premiere works of distinct styles. Tina Kay Bohnstedt’s “What happens backstage…” takes a humorous, behind-the-scene look at the battle between dancers and stage workers. It’s a piece inspired by and reflects the different characters and personalities of the company. Priscilla Nathan Murphy’s “Fuga/The Chase” is about the fickleness in relationships. The 12-cello arrangement of Astor Piazolla’s Fuga Misterio provides the inspiration behind the piece. Gulledge-Brown’s “Serenity” rounds out the show with her signature classical style. Moved by Franz Waxman’s music and celebrating the birth of her own daughter, Gulledge-Brown’s work deals with finding peace, happiness and balance throughout life’s many changes.

Join us this March for a look into the art of dance through the fairer sex perspective.
