Uptown Dance Company Toasts Twentieth Season 

HOUSTON, TX — Uptown Dance Company presents A Toast To Uptown: Celebrating 20 Years, an evening of four world premieres. Beth Gulledge Brown, Nao Kusuzaki, and Caleb Mitchell each created a new piece in celebration of the company’s 20th anniversary. The works highlight the company dancers’ versatility with contemporary ballet and jazz, underscored by their classical ballet roots. Rupert Edwards III, former Houston Ballet dancer, will guest with the company at both performances at 7:30 pm on February 28 and 29, in Uptown’s black box theater. 

Florida State University Assistant Professor of Dance and former Houston Ballet dancer Caleb Mitchell set Beauty from Ashes on the company. Former Houston Ballet dancer and local ballet instructor Nao Kusuzaki accentuates the company’s fluid contemporary movement in Nagoya 1534. Artistic Director Beth Gulledge-Brown’s new work for the company fuses jazz and ballet set to music by the Beatles. And, Company II will perform another Gulledge-Brown piece, which will be accompanied by a live guitar duo. 

Following the Saturday performance, the public is invited to attend a champagne reception at Dolce & Cafe. Performance and reception tickets are available via the company’s website at UptownDance.org/Tickets.

The Company fosters an appreciation of dance within the Houston community by offering family-friendly dance performances and educational opportunities.
