A Contemporary Evening of Kathak’s Traditional Repertoire Featuring Greater Houston Area Artists

On October 19, 2024, Houston hosts 5×5, showcasing 5 rhythms from Kathak’s traditional dance repertoire with live classical music. This evening-length presentation highlights five distinct elements, each featuring a different aspect of Kathak’s rich cultural heritage, performed by local artists in a contemporary setting.

The performance presents five key features:

1. Kathak (Dance): The evening commences with a dynamic display of Kathak, a classical Indian dance form renowned for its intricate footwork, spins, and expressive storytelling. Kathak is performed by Kalpana Subbarao and Silambam Houston Dance Company dancers, Neha Shah and Vruti Patel.
2. Tabla (Percussion): The rhythmic heartbeat of the performance, Tabla, is showcased by the master percussionist, Jason Zinn. The Tabla’s complex rhythms and beats add depth and vitality to the dance, illustrating Kathak’s intricate relationship between rhythm and movement.
3. Sitar (String): Adding a melodic dimension, the Sitar by Dr. Rajarshi Bandyopadhyay brings a resonant and evocative sound to the stage. The performance highlights the Sitar’s ability to convey emotion and narrative, complementing the visual and rhythmic elements of the evening.
4. Harmonium (Organ): The Harmonium by Dr. Jyoti Joshi provides a rich, harmonic backdrop, enhancing the overall atmosphere with warm, resonant tones. The inclusion of the Harmonium underscores the traditional and contemporary fusion of the performance.
5. Hindustani (Vocal): Traditional Hindustani vocal music by Shyama Mishra anchors the performance with its expressive and melodic qualities. Shyama sings classical compositions that enrich Kathak’s narrative and emotional depth, creating a harmonious blend of sound and movement.
