Mourning Has Broken is the title ascribed to Ad Deum Dance Company’s premiere collaboration with dancers from the prestigious legacy of The José Limón Dance Company. It has been many years since artists from the Limón Company have performed on Houston stages. Ad Deum is honored to host their return in this artistic fusion of dance offerings.

Durell R. Comedy and Logan Frances Kruger are the two ambassadors of Limón heritage being sent to Houston. They will bring in their beings the signature grace and pure passion of the Limón-style and technique. Among their works are Excerpts from Mazurkas – created in 1958 by José Limón is a tribute to the heroic spirit of the Polish people and their musical heritage. Comedy and Kruger will also perform a duet from the work A Choreographic Offering created by Limón is 1964.

Ad Deum Dance Company has also been enriched in the spirit of Limón. Mr. Comedy has created Joyful Noise as a choreographic gift to the artists of the company. This work explodes in exuberance and soars in boundless freedom. Its musicality is of richest blend and its essence deep in inspired joy. The work is a celebration that springs from the source of promised hope.

Other creations to be revealed are former Houston Ballet dancer Caleb Mitchell’s intriguing pas de deux known as Forbearance. The work is performed by Ad Deum veteran artist Shizu Yasuda of Japan and Brazilian male partner Lysion Vieira. Together, this pair defy gravitational pull with seamless falls and enthralling recovery.

The mastery of former Martha Graham prodigy Steve Rooks is unveiled in the alluring lament of This Bitter Earth with music by genius Max Richter and the dirge deep vocals of Dinah Washington. This dance for five explores the quest for life among the thorns where roses bloom and sometimes bleed.

Vincent Hardy, former dance-Olympian of Complexions Contemporary Ballet brings his fragrant With Incense, We Rise.   This hymn-crafted gem sings its own doxology of praise.

Joining in the creative force, Ad Deum director Randall Flinn spreads his mantle over the face of several sculptures of living motion. His works on this program include the battle born blows of Sacrifice, the nourishing manna of Bread of Angels, the pulsating drives of From One Heart and the emotional brokenness of I Am Winter.
