Chapman Dance Presents “Entanglements”

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CHAPMAN DANCE Presents Entanglements
at Midtown Arts Theatre Center Houston, September 26-28, 2024

Houston, TX — Chapman Dance proudly announces their upcoming contemporary dance production, Entanglements, choreographed by Teresa Chapman, Artistic Director of Chapman Dance. This captivating performance will take place at the Midtown Arts Theatre Center Houston 3400 Main Street Houston Texas, 77002 from September 26 to 28, 2024 at 7:30pm.

Entanglements marks Chapman’s latest evening-work, exploring themes inspired by physics and driven by our profound human desire for connection. In a world often defined by divisions, the production draws inspiration from the words of Neil DeGrasse Tyson: “we are all connected; To each other, biologically. To the earth, chemically. To the rest of the universe atomically.” Through intricate choreography and emotive performances, Chapman Dance seeks to illuminate how our connections shape our existence, echoing the sentiment of Matthew Lieberman that “we are wired to connect.”

The cast features a stellar lineup of Houston’s contemporary dance talents, including Lindsey McGill, LaRodney Freeman, Roberta Paxiao Cortes, Travis Prokop, Kristen Frankiewitz, Jessica Figeuroa, Lauren Burke, and Sarah Havemann. Each dancer brings a unique energy and perspective to the stage, enriching the narrative of human interconnectedness portrayed in Entanglements.

Highlights of the performance include:
Opposing Forces: Inspired by Newton’s Third Law of relativity, this piece delves into the dynamic forces at play in relationships, where every action triggers an equal and opposite reaction, exploring the complexity and fragility of human interactions.
Cosmic Fragments: A collaborative creation between composer Sam Wu and Teresa Chapman, supported by the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center and the Convergence Research Series 2024. Premiering earlier this year at the Blaffer Gallery, University of Houston, “Cosmic Fragments” draws from quantum entanglement theory, illustrating how connections transcend physical boundaries.
Memento Mori: Originally choreographed for three women and re-staged for two men, Travis Prokop and LaRodney Freeman. Set to an original score by George Heathco, this piece explores themes of transformation with a compelling blend of delicate sounds and driving rhythms in Raga form.
When We Enter: delves into the diverse dynamics between individuals, encompassing themes of love, connection, and the nuances of human interaction. Entanglements captures the essence of relationships, from the nurturing bonds of family to the intricate dynamics of friendships and the depths of romantic love. Entanglements promises an evening of thought-provoking choreography and evocative performances, inviting audiences to contemplate the importance of relationships and their significance in our lives.
