Houston, TX – Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre will be celebrating the 38th season presenting the best and brightest artists to Houston audiences. The event is January 14 – February 10, 2018. Dance community outreach, audience expansion and professional artistic development are continuing goals of Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre.

Dance Month opens January 14, at 3:00 p.m. with Broadway Jazz: from Jack Cole to Bob Fosse, a lecture with video clips that include examples of choreography by Cole and Fosse will be presented by Debra Dickinson. Dickinson teaches the Opera workshop classes at the Shepherd School, in addition to classes in the History of Musical Theater in the theater department and the School of Continuing Studies of Rice.

Ohad Atia, world renowned Israeli choreographer and teacher, returns to Houston for Tirkedu Houston! a fun-filled weekend of Israeli dancing in celebration of Israel at 70, January 18-21. The weekend will include a Friday evening get together, teaching sessions for intermediate to advanced dancers, a Saturday night dance party and a review at the end of each session.

Houston Choreographers X6 continues our tradition of featuring six Houston choreographers presenting original works ranging from Hip Hop to Contemporary  January 27 at 8:00 p.m. The performance includes: Annie Arnoult, Tehillah Hartmann, Tony Merriwether, Bryan Paule /Joel Rivera, Andre Silva and Jennifer Wood. Houston Ballet Academy will make a guest appearance performing “Michelle,” “She Loves You and “Carry the Weight” three sections from Stanton Welch’s piece Long and Winding Road.

Arts in the Afternoon features A Cultural Journey through India with Rathna Kumar and Venugopal Josyula in the Kaplan Theatre February 2 at 1:00 p.m.. Rathna and Venugopal will perform classical and folk dances from different regions of South India, highlighting the colorful, vibrant and rich artistic heritage of the country.

Peridance Contemporary Dance Company of New York City performs February 10 at 8:00 p.m. Founded by Artistic Director Igal Perry, the company is described as elegant, evocative and memorable. PCDC has been a powerhouse of energetic and evocative dance since its inception in 1984 Perry, together with Executive Director Yarden Ronen-van Heerden, has structured the company to explore and experiment with innovative movement and design while upholding the elegance and articulation of classical ballet, with an emphasis on performing repertory by notable choreographers.

In addition to performances by renowned companies, Dance Month at the Kaplan Theatre will present an Audition Tour Class and a Master Class with Peridance Contemporary Dance Company. Peridance Capezio Center will conduct its Audition Tour Class at the J for its two summer intensive programs, Blueprint Intensive and Teen Intensive, and it’s year-round, Certificate Program. The Audition Tour Class and the Master Class will be on February 8 from 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. for intermediate to advanced level dancers.
