FrenetiCore presents there is no answer as to why me: A Dance Tribute to David Rakoff, December 6-14, 2013 at 8pm at Frenetic Theater, merging dance, text, music and film into a moving evening of performance. Rakoff was most notably famous for his numerous story contributions to NPR’s This American Life, such as Christmas Freud and The Scorpion and Tortoise. He was both loved and hated for his neurotic self-absorption and brutal, unflinching wit. While always entertaining, each piece of his work also expresses profound truth about what it is to live–and die, with meaning.

Inspired by Rakoff’s writings and radio essays, choreographers Rebecca French, Ashley Horn and Aileen Mapes unfolded the tales into movement with a cast of 14 of Houston’s most talented dancers. there is no answer as to why me takes the audience on a journey through subject matter ranging from whimsical to tragic but always with Rakoff’s clever, biting style.

Join FrenetiCore as we celebrate the life and writing of David Rakoff through contemporary dance, film, music, and the immortal recorded voice of Rakoff himself.

About the choreographers

Rebecca French has been dancing and choreographing since 1995. She founded FrenetiCore in 2003 and has directed and performed in over 30 full-length dance theater shows. Rebecca’s approach to choreography is based on her study of theater and numerous dance disciplines. She is most interested in highly theatrical work that entertains while expressing profound truths about the human condition.

Ashley Horn is a dancer, choreographer, filmmaker, costume designer, and artist from the Houston area.  In 2012, Ashley was a recipient of an individual artist grant from the Houston Arts Alliance to create an evening-length dance film, Wanderland and was named one of the 100 Creatives of 2013 by the Houston Press.

Aileen Mapes is a native Houstonian who returned to continue choreographing and dancing. She holds an MFA in dance from AZ State University where she taught and explored guerrilla dance and studied contemporary movement.
