THE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS, HOUSTON COMMISSIONS NEW WORK
FROM CORE PERFORMANCE COMPANY
Free performance on February 27 responds to the work of George Braque
(Houston, Texas) January 9, 2014 – In response to the presentation of George Braque: A Retrospective at the MFAH, the artists of CORE Performance Company under the direction of Artistic Director Sue Schroeder have created a new work, “Beauty as Braque: Volume*Line*Mass*Weight*.” It will premiere on Thursday, February 27 at 6:30 p.m. in the Brown Auditorium at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. This performance celebrates the 11th year of CORE’s partnership with the museum to create a kinetic exploration of the intention and process of the visual art on view at the museum. Entry to the MFAH and performance are free on Thursdays courtesy of Shell.
“The artists of CORE are challenged and inspired by the artwork of George Braque,” said Sue Schroder. “We enjoy delving into the intent of this artist and responding to his work through movement.”
George Braque: A Retrospective
One of the most influential painters of the 20th century, Braque invented Cubism with his friend and collaborator, Pablo Picasso. This definitive retrospective of the career of Georges Braque (1882–1963) presents 75 significant works of art. The selections range from the artist’s early, bold Fauvist paintings, to the radical Cubist compositions that shaped the course of Modern art, to the lyrical still lifes and landscape abstractions of his later years. It is the first comprehensive museum survey of Braque’s work seen in the United States in 25 years.
The MFAH is the only U.S. venue for Georges Braque: A Retrospective, which premiered at the Grand Palais in Paris in 2013. Organized to mark the 50th anniversary of the French artist’s death, the exhibition draws on the deep collections of Braque’s work at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, with additional loans gathered from public and private collections across Europe and the United States. Works from the MFAH collections are also included. Georges Braque: A Retrospective will be on view at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, from February 16 to May 11, 2014.
