Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective Continues Touring “The Fairytale Project” on Houston’s Southside in collaboration with RSA of Dance and Performing Arts
Houston, TX – Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective is back on the road bringing their acclaimed production The Fairytale Project to schools in Houston’s Southside. The tour will visit schools, offering students a powerful opportunity to engage with African American history through an immersive dance-theatre experience.
Founded by Stacey Allen, Artistic Director of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective, The Fairytale Project is inspired by the incredible true story of Jim and Winnie Shankle, the founders of the Texas Freedom Colony, Shankleville. This historically rich performance blends elements of modern and contemporary dance, jazz, musical theatre, and African diasporic dance to tell the story of a modern-day African American family reconnecting with their East Texas roots.
“We are thrilled to be bringing The Fairytale Project to our schools,” said Stacey Allen. “As we continue our mission to share the legacy of love, resilience, and ancestral connection, I am excited to share this story with young audiences right here in our own backyard. Touring has been a wonderful experience, and we’re proud to bring our work to our homebase as we continue educating and inspiring families.”
Having previously toured across Texas, including rural communities and urban centers, Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective is honored to bring this unique, TEKS-aligned performance to the students in Houston. The Fairytale Project presents African American history in a way that is engaging for audiences of all ages, blending storytelling, movement, and culture in a vibrant celebration of Texas’s Freedom Colonies and the rich legacies of African American families.
The tour will include stops at the following schools:
- Bethel’s Family Christian Academy
- Bastian Elementary School (Houston ISD)
- The Imani School
With past performances receiving praise across the state, these tour stops represent another exciting milestone for the company. Audiences can expect an unforgettable performance that not only entertains but also educates, leaving lasting impressions on students and educators alike. This performance is made possible with support from ArtsHere, City of Houston Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs, Dance Source Houston, Texas Commission of the Arts, Houston Equity Fund, Arts Connect Houston, Primeway Federal Credit Union and community support.
