MORGAN CHOREOGRAPHER & DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR NATIVE ARTS AND CULTURES (CNAC), PORTLAND, OR CO-PRESENTED WITH THE CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON STUDIO VISIT APPLICATION DEADLINE: FRIDAY, MARCH 18 LECTURE: WEDNESDAY, APRIL 6, 6:30 PM (Houston, TX, February 25, 2022)– (Houston, TX, February 25, 2022) – DiverseWorks, in collaboration with the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston, is pleased to announce the Spring 2022 Diverse Discourse Lecture and Studio Visit Program with Christopher K. Morgan, Choreographer & Director of the Center for Native Arts and Cultures (CNAC) on Wednesday, April 6. In this talk, titled Creative Collaboration: Interweaving in Arts Leadership, Christopher will discuss the importance of operating with an abundance mindset and how he brings Native Hawaiian values to all facets of his work. DIVERSE DISCOURSE LECTURE Wednesday, April 6, 2022, 6:30 PM Dudley Recital Hall Fine Arts Building, Room 132 University of Houston Campus Map ADMISSION: The lecture is free to attend; seating is first-come, first-served. DIVERSE DISCOURSE STUDIO VISIT APPLICATIONS Houston-area artists of all disciplines (including visual artists, writers, dancers, choreographers, and performance artists) may apply for studio visits with Diverse Discourse lecturers. Artists are selected by the visiting lecturer. Morgan (he/him) is a choreographer, educator, facilitator, curator, and arts administrator. Known as a thoughtful advocate for cultural integrity, inclusivity and diverse representation in the studio and on stage, his Native Hawaiian ancestry and wide-ranging international performance career influence all aspects of his work. Morgan founded his contemporary dance company Christopher K. Morgan & Artists in 2011 to create performances that explore identity, social, and cultural issues. Grants and awards include a 2013 Native Arts & Cultures Foundation Fellowship, 2014 and 2019 NPN Creation Funds, 2014 and 2019 NEFA National Dance Project Production Grant, 2018 Native Launchpad Award from the Western Arts Alliance, and a 2019 Dance USA Fellowship for Artists. In 2022, Morgan assumed a new position as Director of the Center for Native Arts and Cultures (CNAC) in Portland, Oregon. Previously, Morgan served as Executive Artistic Director of Dance Place in Washington, D.C. since 2017, where he stewarded the organization through the triple pandemics of 2020 maintaining the entire staff with no layoffs or furloughs, while continuing to pay artists and teachers. At Dance Place, he oversaw the curation of over 30 weekends of performances and artist-centered projects annually, a school for youth and adults, and continued Dance Place’s role as a neighborhood community arts center and nationally prominent performing arts presenter. ABOUT DIVERSE DISCOURSE Diverse Discourse brings national curators, artistic directors, and critics to Houston to present a free public lecture and conduct studio visits with Houston-area artists, performers, and writers. Diverse Discourse provides a significant opportunity for area artists in all disciplines to have their work reviewed by a variety of distinguished arts professionals, fostering a cultural exchange across the nation between artists and cultural producers. Previous lecturers have included Sonia Guiñansaca, Managing Director, Culturestrike, Candice Hopkins, Independent Curator & Writer; Senior Curator, Toronto Biennial of Art, Kemi Ilesanmi, Executive Director, The Laundromat Project, New York, NY, Drew Klein, Performing Arts Director, Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, Adriel Luis, Curator of Digital and Emerging Practice, Smithsonian Asian Pacific American Center, and Larry Ossei-Mensah, Curator-at-Large, Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) and Co-Founder of ARTNOIR, among others. ABOUT THE CYNTHIA WOODS MITCHELL CENTER FOR THE ARTS The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Center for the Arts at the University of Houston is the interdisciplinary arts resource on campus for UH students, faculty and staff, as well as the general public. In order to bridge disciplines, stimulate dialogue and support the creation of innovative works, the Mitchell Center supports a variety of programs such as visiting artists, lectures and workshops, scholarships, fellowships, performances, exhibitions.
