The Pilot Dance Project Presents El Baile de Loteria and Other Dances
as part of the 2nd Annual Mix-MATCH: A Mixed Arts Festival!

HOUSTON (January 1, 2025) – The Pilot Dance Project begins the 2025 performance season with its second appearance at the Mix-MATCH: A Mixed Arts Festival produced by the Midtown Arts and Theater Center Houston. This year the company’s hour-long showcase features new and repertory works by Executive and Artistic Director Adam Castan͂eda, and company member and acclaimed local choreographer Cynthia Garcia. The performance will be held on Saturday, January 18th in MATCHBOX TWO during the 6:30 timeslot.

El Baile de Loteria and Other Dances includes the first half of an evening-length work by Cynthia Garcia. Inspired by the beloved Mexican board game of the same name, El Baile de Loteria brings to life its colorful cast of characters through a series of vignettes. The seven short dances of the series will be performed by The Pilot Dance Project company members Adam Castan͂eda, Jade Devault, Cynthia Garcia, Jaime Garcia, Sierra Johnson, Cloe Leppard, and Mia Pham; as well as guests of The Pilot Dance Project Angel Guerrero, Emily Rodriguez, Andrea Salinas, and Macy Watts. These dances were previously performed at community-based events in the fall of 2024, including MECA’s Dia de Muertos Festival and the MD Anderson’s Posada celebration. This community-driven project is the recipient of a City’s Initiative Grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and the full iteration will premiere in Fall 2025.

The program will open with a reprisal of Adam Castan͂eda’s“Purple Bromeliads,” which was last seen on the Miller Outdoor Theatre stage for Bayou City Dances. The work is inspired by Castan͂eda’s affinity for the work of science-fiction writer N.K. Jemison and the houseplant of the same name. “Purple Bromeliads” will be accompanied by live music by Anthony Almendarez and Gabriel Martinez, and an animated backdrop by Ceci Norman. The choreography will be performed by The Pilot Dance Project company members Ashley Boykin, Morgan Brown, Adam Castan͂eda, Jasmine Chrystine, Keeley Dunnam, Cynthia Garcia, Sierra Johnson, and Mia Pham. “Purple Bromeliads” is a recipient of a Let Creativity Happen! Grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance.

The evening will also include “Rain near the Danube,” a new piece by Castan͂eda set on the student dancers of the HCC Dance Ensemble. Inspired by his time in Budapest with two dear friends, “Rain near the Danube” examines four friends as they embark on a journey filled with crossroads and winding paths. At times moving together, and at other times lost in their own roundabouts, the four friends are united in their realization that the only pathway is forward and through the rain.

Individual show tickets to The Pilot Dance Project’s performances, as well as festival passes, are available at www.matchouston.org. Individual show tickets are $15, while all-inclusive festival passes are $40.
