A New Show from Houston’s New Generation – UpTurn: Evolving Attachments

Join us, July 10th, 2021 at 7:30 at Garage713 Studio for the premier of UpTurn: Evolving Attachments, a new evening-length show choreographed and produced by Jessica “Luz” Figueroa, Mary Catherine McReynolds, and Mia Pham with performances by special guest artists from varying styles. Additionally, vendors from local businesses such as Channel Purple, Roaring Loud, NG Jewelry and others will be making an appearance to showcase their products before the start of the performance. UpTurn seeks to show viewers the total creative freedom of three girls after a long time with none. 

One of the biggest impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic has been the drastic limitations put on artists to freely create and share their work. Having just begun our dance careers during such a tumultuous time, we were at a loss on how we could grow as artists. Now, after the effects of the pandemic have calmed down a bit, we decided to finally produce a show of our own and utilize our personal experiences to choreograph. UpTurn: Evolving Attachments is a show that dives into our personal styles and represents our journey as artists during this period of time; from here on, we are only going upward and onwards. 

Another aspect we wanted to focus on was incorporating the many parts of Houston’s dance community. The three of us have mostly trained in modern dance, however, since last year, we have been exposed to many other dance styles and communities, such as the hip-hop and heels scene. We wanted this show to bring people together, empowering Houston artists while also exposing audiences to alternative types of dance. Houston has much to offer, and we wanted to provide diverse artists with a platform to showcase these diverse styles. 

UpTurn: Evolving Attachments is performed/choreographed by Jessica “Luz” Figueroa, Mary Catherine McReynolds, Mia Pham, along with guest artists Sonia Engman, Lena Yeh, Brittany Bass, Transformative Grounds, Whylan Rucker, Amanda Monteith, and Irma A. García. UpTurn is a live show with in-person dancing as well as the premier of original dance films.
