“Dance Salad Festival: 25 Years in Houston”
a one-night screening presented by Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
Wednesday, March 31, 2021
7:00 PM to 8:30 PM
Introduction by Nancy Henderek
A new compilation film of highlights from Dance Salad Festival during its 25 years in Houston will be shown through the Museum of Fine Arts Houston on Wednesday, March 31 at 7pm. Originally filmed for archival purposes, excerpts of performances by world-acclaimed choreographers, dancers, and dance companies have been edited into one film.
“Because of limited access to live dance performances during these times, sharing these beautifully curated performances is my gift to Houston,” said Nancy Henderek, founder of Dance Salad Festival and director of the Houston International Dance Coalition. For the MFAH screening, Henderek will introduce her film and provide a short background about its creation.
This film allows viewers to watch these Dance Salad Festival performances in an unprecedented way. Houstonians may have seen these groundbreaking works in person for their live stage presentations at the Wortham Center’s Cullen Theater or viewed clips of previous performances discussed by featured choreographers as part of the annual Dance Salad Festival Choreographers Forum at the MFAH.
In this film, excerpted performances range in length from two to ten minutes (estimated running time of one hour and 15 minutes). Some of the featured choreographers include Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Jirí Kylián, Mats Ek, William Forsythe, David Dawson, and many more.
Register today via Zoom to watch the MFAH film program (https://www.mfah.org/calendar/virtual-dance-salad-choreographers-forum/202103311900). Can’t make that date and time? Sign up to be notified of future limited-run, on-demand screenings through Dance Salad Festival at www.dancesalad.org.
ABOUT HOUSTON INTERNATIONAL DANCE COALITION: Founded in 1995, the mission of the Houston International Dance Coalition is to invigorate dance in Houston through its annual Dance Salad Festival, which presents top-quality performances by international, national, and regional dance companies while emphasizing the roles of dance and music as fundamental forms of human expression and offering opportunities to see dance otherwise unavailable.
ABOUT DANCE SALAD FESTIVAL: Dance Salad Festival is internationally known as a celebration of all kinds of dance, from the precise movements of European contemporary ballet to the poetic sensitivity of Asian-influenced dance to the engaging rhythms of African-inspired modern dance. Produced by the nonprofit Houston International Dance Coalition (HIDC), DSF’s multicultural, genre-crossing programming has evolved because it is so inherently compelling to members of the audience.
