WHAT: The Pilot Dance Project continues to produce relevant and compelling live dance works during the pandemic with Underneath the Surface, a concert featuring new pieces by company artists, including Ashley Horn, Lori Yuill, Ke’Ron Wilson, Jose Zamora, and Artistic and Executive Director Adam Castaneda.
Ashley Horn will premiere “Little Things, Tiny Things,” an exploration of the loss of people in recent years due to death or distance through the scope of tiny memories. Lori Yuill will show “Sessing,” inspired both by N. K. Jemisin’s Broken Earth Trilogy and the break in our normal ways of sensing and relating to others caused by the pandemic. Acclaimed choreographer Jose Zamora, artistic director of CholoRock Dance Theatre based in Mission, Texas, will showcase “Dos Bailes de Amor.” In these two romantic vignettes, Zamora explores dance theatre as a vehicle for insight and understanding of the love and attraction one person can feel for another. Adam Castaneda will premiere two new works, including “Beyond the Open Window.” Based on an original poem by Jordan Habibi, the piece is a collaboration among local community members that illuminates the joy of companionship, including the laughter, conversations, and gentle touches that provide the windows into each other’s personal lives. His second new piece, “The Tumult That Bubbles Underneath the Surface,” is set on company dancers and explores the tension that can choke from within. Recent Dance Source Houston Spark Grant recipient, Ke’Ron Wilson will unveil a new quartet that exemplifies their creative practice: Each piece of art and movement exploration is designed to invite the audience, or student, into a realm in which mind, body and spirit are unified towards personal and collective liberation.
WHO: The Pilot Dance Project’s new concert features six original works danced by some of the city’s most prolific contemporary dancers. The company roster includes Adam Castaneda, Lindsay Cortner, Jade Devault, Cloe Leppard, Steffani Lopez, Nicole McNeil, Mia Pham, Kristina Prats, Courtney Sherman-Allen, Paty Lorena Solorzano, and Lena Yeh.
