“Weaving Northside” — Where Visual and Performance Art Meet
“Weaving Northside” represents the celebration of community in the Near Northside
HOUSTON, October 20, 2020 — “Weaving Northside” is a community-based public art and performance project conceived by Art Uniti’s (artuniti.com) Tami Moschioni and Nicola Parente. Weaving Northside’s sculpture totems will be unveiled on November 7th at the BakerRipley Leonel Castillo Community Center located at 2101 South Street, Houston, TX 77009. The sculptures will be assembled during a twenty-minute outdoor dance performance. The performance is choreographed by The Pilot Dance Project’s Artistic Director, Adam Castaneda, with performances at 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm. The 5:00 pm performance will coincide with sunset, as dancers and sculpture unite for a concluding tableaux that pays tribute to the Near Northside community.
The collaborative creation of this new public artwork was inspired by responses from a community survey about the significance and cultural history of the Near Northside. Similarly, the dance work was created based in response to Art Uniti’s interest in shape, color, and place-making relating to Northside. Weaving Northside, at its core, is a celebration of the people, places, and spirit of one of Houston’s most beloved communities.
Moschioni’s and Parente’s previous community civic art projects include “Snapshot”, “Color Bursting Hermann Park” and “ HYPERLINK “https://artuniti.com/scaped-semses”Scaped Senses.” For more information on this project, please visit ArtUniti.com.
This performance will be an outdoor socially distanced event, with guests seated six feet apart from one another. The dance will be reflective of this concern with performers wearing masks, and attendees are asked to keep their masks on at all times. Limited seating is available, and free tickets must be reserved in advance through https://www.eventbrite.com/e/weaving-northside-tickets-126648792949.
Weaving Northside is funded in part by a 2020 Support for Artists and Creative Individuals grant from the City of Houston through the Houston Arts Alliance and made possible thru partnerships with The Pilot Dance Project, Baker Ripley, Greater Northside Management District, Avenue, and fiscal sponsor Fresh Arts. Additional funding comes from the Texas Commission on the Arts and the Dance Source Houston GroundWorks grant.
