2014 Third Coast Dance Film Festival Enters Third Season

Third Coast Dance Film Fest

Third Coast Dance Film Fest

Houston, TX.- Now in it’s fourth season, The Third Coast Dance Festival returns on Oct. 1 at 6 pm at Diverseworks Arts Space.  Curated by Rosie Trump, Lydia Hance, Ashley Horn, and Rebecca Salzar, The Third Coast Dance Film Festival celebrates the intersection of contemporary dance and the moving image with a screening series of short dance films.   This year’s festival also features Houston based dance filmmaker Emily Robison.

The festival will screen nineteen film shorts, including thirteen international films from Canada, Germany, Israel, Mexico, Norway, South Korea, Spain, and the UK.  The program includes three world, six USA, and ten Texas premieres. Co-curator and festival founder Rosie Trump notes, “The festival keeps growing each year, attracting stronger submissions from around the world.”

There is something for everyone Trump explains, “Some of the films are very emotional, some are funny and clever, but one of the most striking features of this year’s selections are the visual effects! Several films incorporate innovative animation, graphic, and lighting techniques.  Many take place in the most beautiful or unusual places.”

Dance film is unique in its ability to take dancing off the stage and into real life environments.  Audiences will see dancing on desert dunes, elevators, warehouses, ladders, farm fields, and more at this year’s festival.

Houston native Emily Robison will have her first dance film “Repercussions” showcased at the festival.  She comments on the nature of the medium by saying ”As a young artist, dance on film is an accessible medium for me.  I find working with film to be much more intimate than performing on stage.”

New this year, the Third Coast Dance Film Festival will honor four outstanding films with awards.  There will be three “Best of Festival” awards and a “Spirit of the Third Coast Dance Film Festival” award granted.

The Third Coast Dance Film Festival is Houston’s premier event for dance on film.  The 2012 and 2011 festival went on tour, screening at the Kaleidoscope Arts Festival outside of Pittsburgh, PA. Founded in 2010 by Rosie Trump, the 2014 festival is co-curated by Rosie Trump, Lydia Hance, Ashley Horn, and Rebecca Salzar.

The fourth annual Third Coast Dance Film Festival opens on Oct. 1 at 6 pm at Diverseworks at 4102 Fannin, Suite 200, Houston, Texas 77004 (entrance on Cleburne between Fannin and Main).  This event is part of DiverseWorks DWOW series. It is free and open to the public.
