HOUSTON’S DANCE SCENE GETS A BOOST WITH BOOT DANCE PROJECT AND ITS DEBUT FESTIVAL

A new platform centered on access, ownership, and real opportunity for Texas dance artists

HOUSTON, TEXAS — A fresh force is stepping into the spotlight of Houston’s vibrant dance community. BOOT Dance Project, a new nonprofit dedicated to uplifting Texas-based dance artists and audiences, is launching its first-ever festival this summer: Break-In Dance Fest, held on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at the Midtown Arts & Theater Center Houston (MATCH).

Unlike traditional dance festivals, Break-In Dance Fest is more than just a performance, it’s a launchpad for artists. BOOT Dance Project designed this platform around artist ownership, accessibility, and real career-building opportunities. From teaching and networking to compensation and visibility, the festival supports choreographers beyond the stage.

“At BOOT, we’re not just creating platforms, we’re building a culture where Texas dancers and choreographers are truly supported. That means removing barriers, offering real opportunities, and making sure artists are seen, valued, and paid for their work. Our goal is to help make Texas a place where dance careers can thrive,” said Jessie Ferguson, Founder and Artistic Director of BOOT Dance Project.

This year’s featured choreographers include Nikolas Darrough, Jessie Ferguson, Madison Kotch, Hannah Mettler, Maddie Medina, Isabella Mireles Vik, Drew Phipps, Grace Reagan, and Aniya Wingate. These nine artists represent a rich range of contemporary dance voices and bring work that reflects the dynamic creative energy thriving throughout Texas.

Each choreographer will personally introduce their work before it begins, offering audiences a direct connection to the artist’s voice, inspiration, and process. Rather than just showcasing the final product, Break-In Dance Fest emphasizes the people behind the movement.

Leading up to the performance, all choreographers are invited to teach at BOOT Camp (August 1–3), a summer intensive for pre-professional and professional dancers. This paid teaching opportunity allows choreographers to expand their reach, share their methods, and connect with the next generation of artists.

After the performance, BOOT Dance Project will host a casual networking event where choreographers, dancers, industry professionals, and audience members can connect and spark future collaborations. Additionally, each choreographer’s contact information, website, and social media handles will be printed in the program, making it easy for presenters, producers, and collaborators to follow up.

All choreographers will receive a stipend for their work, reinforcing BOOT Dance Project’s commitment to valuing artists not just in spirit, but through financial support.
