Houston, Texas: Have you ever seen dance performance under water? Tucked between the worlds of Dance Performance and Film lies a stirring category called Dance Film, or Dance-on-Camera. Dance film is a powerful way to allow audiences to see dance as it relates to different environments. You can take the cameras to places you can’t bring large live audiences. “I want to bring national and international dance film to Houston, and give Houstonians a chance to see dance as it relates to different spaces,” explains Artistic Director Lydia Hance. The first annual Frame x Frame Dance Film Fest will be held at Aurora Picture Show, Houston Ballet, and Frame Dance from September 21-23, 2018. The call for films will open April 25, 2018.

Frame x Frame Dance Film Fest aims to bring dance filmmaking to Houston audiences while providing a platform for emerging and established filmmakers to share their work with the world, inspiring creativity and innovation.

Artistic Director Lydia Hance, is a choreographer and filmmaker who has dedicated much of her career to making dance in Houston landscapes. Known for creating public dance performances and dance films in unusual spaces like the METRORail, the downtown tunnels, in the backs of box trucks, she approaches her own work as an opportunity to get people to learn more about dance.

Frame x Frame Dance Film Fest is open to films of 8 minutes or less that explore the relationship of the moving body and the camera. Films will be selected based on the quality of the image, sound, and the choreography of the body as well as the camera.

“Dance brings people together, and has the power spark joy in the mundane,” explains Hance. “I am excited to bring dance films from all over the world to my Houston community. There is an abundance of beautifully crafted choreography for the camera set all over the world, and film allows us to see it here in Houston.”
