FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
NIA’S DAUGHTERS MOVEMENT COLLECTIVE RECEIVES CONGRESSIONAL RECOGNITION
Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective received a Congressional Recognition from Congressman Al Green for their mission aligned work creating and supporting art and wellness initiatives through the lens of Black women and girls.. This recognition came August 15th, days ahead of August 20th Slavery Remembrance Day.
Stacey Allen, award winning Founder/Artistic Director of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective, creates dance theater and arts experiences for families. After recently completing a Texas Tour of “The Fairytale Project”, and bringing the dance troupe to her local community of Fort Bend County for a performance of “Liturgy of Remembrance” in collaboration with Rising Stars Academy of Dance and Performing Arts under the direction of Denisea Woodard.
Liturgy of Remembrance commemorates the lived histories of enslaved Africans who learned of their freedom under the Freedom Tree in Fort Bend County. This performance was paired with Our Stories Through Textiles: Quilting and More, facilitated by a quilting instructor. Participants learned about the rich history of quilting in African American history and received materials to begin their own quilts.
“I am honored that I am able to show the love and resilience of our ancestors. It’s truly liberating to create work surrounding the legacies of love and Texas Freedom Colonies and Black Texans in general” said Stacey Allen, Founder/Artistic Director of Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective. “I am grateful for the community support I’ve received thus far and receiving this Congressional Recognition from Congressman Al Green was a complete surprise, but what makes this extra special is receiving it in Missouri City, where I grew up and where we are raising our children. I am truly honored.”
Next for Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective is the residency in Freedman’s Town.
