“The Official Juneteenth Return” Melds Dance, History,and Healing at the Birthplace of Freedom

On June 19th, over 400 attendees gathered in Galveston, TX—the historic birthplace of Juneteenth—for The Official Juneteenth Return, a cultural homecoming that honored Black liberation through dance, music, and art.

Led by Nia’s Daughters Movement Collective in collaboration with Elevate Experiences, the event centered movement as memory, with a stirring performance that reimagined the moment enslaved
Texans learned of their freedom. On the property of the city’s iconic Juneteenth mural, dancers
used storytelling-through-movement to animate 160 years of Black resilience, joy, and ancestral connection.

Texas SBOE member Staci Childs served as host for the event, which unfolded in two acts: an afternoon of visual art and dialogue, followed by an evening jubilee filled with dance, music, and community celebration.

Live performances by Thee Everlasting Vibez and Sha Davis, along with DJs Shante, D Rose, and Al Patrii, kept the energy high as hundreds danced under the stars. With attendees traveling from Michigian, Illinois, Louisiana, and beyond, this celebration was both a powerful tribute and a reminder: dance is more than performance—it’s testimony, tradition, and transformation.
