Houston, TX- HCDC presents HTX Contemporary Dance Fest June 24th and 25th at 7PM at the Institute Hobby Center for the Performing Arts. The inaugural HTX Contemporary Festival, hosted by Houston Contemporary Dance Company, is a two day celebration of contemporary dance designed to bring Houston’s arts community together in a meaningful and engaging way. This festival offers community arts lovers the opportunity to experience dance from multiple perspectives by sharing space with fellow locals in thoughtfully curated master classes and community chats during the day and 2 unique contemporary concerts in the evening. The performance will feature Houston Contemporary Dance Company alongside a selection of distinguished local guest dance companies, including Open Dance Project, Mezclada Dance Company and The Black Angels Collective, highlighting the depth, diversity and talent within our city. Join us for two days of connection, artistry, and a shared appreciation for contemporary dance.

ABOUT HOUSTON CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY: 

Houston Contemporary aims to lead and innovate performing arts in Houston by drawing upon the director’s long tradition of inclusiveness and diversity within all facets of the organization. HCDC sets itself apart by employing high caliber performing and choreographic artists from across the country. In setting high technical and artistic standards, HCDC is currently the only contemporary repertory company to provide Houston audiences with opportunities to view works created by some of America’s most exciting dancemakers that speak to and are representative of the full spectrum of Houston’s diverse populace, while supporting talented Texas based artists as well. 

ABOUT OPEN DANCE PROJECT: 

Open Dance Project is a contemporary dance-theater company, under the direction of Annie Arnoult, whose ensemble-driven work transforms literary, historical, and community-based source material into highly stylized performance experiences. Through a collision of dance and theater, live performance and new media, urban grit and magical realism, Open Dance Project breaks down conventional barriers between artist and audience to make dance more accessible and meaningful for both. Open Dance Project is on the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Artists Roster and is funded in part by the City of Houston through Houston Arts Alliance. The company brings high-quality interdisciplinary arts education and arts integration to Houston school children through its extensive education and community engagement program and partners with Young Audiences of Houston and Arts Connect Houston to work towards arts equity in Houston schools. 

ABOUT MEZCLADA DANCE COMPANY: 

Mezclada Dance Company is dedicated to celebrating diversity by blending cultures and dance styles to create harmonious, original, and widely relatable works. Through performance and outreach, Mezclada uplifts underrepresented dance forms, particularly Latin and Hip Hop dance, while building bridges across Houston communities.The company presents full-length concerts and educational shows locally and nationally. Most recently, Mezclada premiered its newest evening-length work, De Aqui!, at the Cullen Theater at the Wortham Center, commissioned by Performing Arts Houston. Nationally, Mezclada has performed alongside multi Grammy Award winning Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in New York as part of collaborative cultural programming. Mezclada’s upcoming performances include De Aqui! as part of the Hobby Center’s Discovery Series, and Presente!, its upcoming evening length concert in October. Mezclada is proud to be a member of the Texas Commission on the Arts Touring Roster, an Arts Connect Partner providing dance education in HISD schools, and a BIPOC Arts Network and Fund Peer to Peer Mentorship Partner. Mezclada has previously choreographed, instructed, and worked with the University of Houston, Bates Dance Festival, Bailando Dance Festival, Theater Under The Stars, Lamar University, Principia College, University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, San Jacinto College, Houston Community College, Westside High School, South Houston Early College, Dobie High School, and Pin Oak Middle School.

ABOUT THE BLACK ANGELS COLLECTIVE: 

The Black Angels Collective is a company of technically trained dancers of color founded in 2018 by artist, visionary, and entrepreneur, Tobe Nwigwe. The BAC’s mission is to promote positive self image, to create a higher standard in the performance industry, and to inspire women and girls to find their purpose through the medium of dance.
